Foot-In-The-Door Job Seeking Practices

IABC Los Angeles is co-hosting a professional development event with the IABC University of Southern California student chapter to discuss hiring practices and how to get a foot-in-the-door in the field of communications.

January 25, 2010
4:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism
Cowan Auditorium
3502 Watt Way
Los Angeles, CA 90089-0281

Admission: Complimentary for all IABC-Los Angeles chapter members. We request you register for the event to accommodate seating and light refreshments.

Two distinguished speakers will share their experiences in recruiting and career marketing in the communications field. Current USC graduate and undergraduate students will learn how to stand out to recruiters and get a foot-in-the-door for the first job interview.

Although the discussion primarily is directed to students and their job searches, we invite IABC-LA chapter members to be part of the discussion! This is an opportunity for IABC-LA members to give back to the student community by networking with students and offering their own pointers and insights on finding that first job.

Matthew May, author of In Pursuit of Elegance, and former Pepperdine professor, is on a quest to help organizations pursue elegant solutions—ideas and offerings that are at once dirt simple and surprisingly powerful. In today’s sluggish economy and brutally competitive environment, the need for ideas that achieve the maximum effect with minimum means is more imperative than ever. Anchored in a story-driven delivery, Matt’s message and methods offer a blend of wisdom and insightful takeaways that provide a practical approach to building a companywide ethos of personal resourcefulness, lablike curiosity, and designer-like thinking.

Social networking sites are finally finding a home in some internal communications programs. For HR, PR and IT the move presents many challenges—and opportunities. Equation Research says 75 percent of all U.S. employees now use social networks for business purposes. Yet only one third of companies are using social media internally and some 54% forbid the use of social media while at work. Are these companies falling behind by excluding their employees from their social media strategy?

Join us on Tuesday, March 2nd, for a rare examination of social media for internal communications, as Sally Falkow, nationally-recognized social media strategist and PR News’ “PR Trainer of the Year” explains:

  • Why social media is as important to internal communication as it is to external PR strategies
  • How social networking technology can filter information overload, connect employees and improve productivity
  • How to deal with corporate fears and concerns
  • How to address regulatory issues
  • How to handle negative comments
  • What resources are needed
  • Guidelines for participation Plan of attack for adding social media to any internal communications plans
  • Best Buy’s Blue Shirt Nation – case study

While this presentation won’t examine the basics of social media, it is targeted toward internal communications professionals and is designed to deliver concepts and strategies for using social media internally that you can immediately put into place.

Sally Falkow, APR (PRSA), Senior Fellow (Society for New Communication Research) and partner in social media agency Expansion Plus, has blogged about public relations and social media strategies since 2003. More than 300 communications professionals have participated in her social media bootcamps across the country and report success with both internal and external applications of her strategies.
