Your Expert Panel:

Deborah S. Hawkins, Freelancer

Charlotte Lassos, Straight Up Communications

Bill Spaniel, ABC, California Society of CPAs

Judy Sterling, Sterling Communications

Deborah Hawkins

A contented freelancer for 25 years, Deborah Hawkins owns Business Communications, which offers writing, editing and training services to help businesses reach their audience. Steady clients include Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems as well as two sectors of Northrop Grumman -- Space Technology and Integrated Systems. Her specialty is distilling complex technical achievements into compelling, and understandable, success stories geared for a general readership.

She also coaches engineers and other technical professionals to write more targeted, purposeful reports, proposals and presentations. Whether it's a simple triage for wounded writing, or more time-consuming surgery to reroute ideas, she helps clients get results from their communications investments.

Charlotte Lassos

Charlotte Lassos, President of Straight Up Communications, is a senior level communicator with 18 years experience in corporate communications, marketing and public relations. Prior to starting Straight Up Communications in 2006, Charlotte spent 10 years honing her craft at Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), USA, Inc., the sales and marketing corporate headquarters for Toyota, Lexus and Scion in the United States.

In addition to gaining invaluable experience at Toyota, Charlotte has held positions at The Prudential, PacTel Teletrac (a subsidiary of the Pacific Telesis Company), Mobile Technology, Inc. (now Alliance Imaging, Inc.) and Jackson Dawson Communications

Bill Spaniel

Bill Spaniel, ABC, is a former president of IABC Los Angeles as well as a past board member of the former District Six and the current Pacific Plains Region. During his career, Bill has worked as a newspaper reporter and copyeditor, the editor of two major U.S. Army newspapers, the editor of employee publications for a major aerospace company and a utility, and a public relations representative for several employers, including the California Society of CPAs, for which he is the public relations manager. Bill has written numerous speeches, news releases, and articles, and has won a few awards, including one for photography. He has hired freelancers and has been a freelancer himself between employers. He plans to retire from corporate life in about four years, and then he plans to become a full-time freelancer--when he's not cruising or playing with, he hopes, his eventual grandchildren.

Judy Sterling

Judy Sterling founded Sterling Communications over 25 years ago and continues to see her company thrive. Her business background and management experience allows her to thoroughly understand each client’s product or service, audience characteristics, and communications goals and challenges.

The wide variety of clients Judy and Sterling Communications has served includes banks and other financial services institutions, aerospace and defense contractors, professional and consulting firms, internet service providers, electronics companies, health care providers, and retail establishments.
